Electrical code corrections address the gap between how a home's electrical system was wired years or decades ago and what current National Electrical Code standards actually require. Codes evolve for real safety reasons – GFCI and AFCI protection requirements, proper grounding, junction box coverage – and homes wired under older codes often have violations that were perfectly normal at the time but are genuine safety concerns by today's standards.
This typically comes up during a home sale, when a pre-sale inspection flags code violations that need addressing before closing, during a renovation, when opening up walls reveals wiring practices that no longer meet code, when insurance companies require updates as a condition of coverage, or simply because a homeowner wants peace of mind that their older home's electrical system is actually safe by current standards, not just however it happened to be wired originally.
We start with a thorough inspection against current code requirements, identifying specific violations rather than assuming a home needs a full rewire when targeted corrections might be enough. Common corrections include adding GFCI protection in kitchens, bathrooms, and outdoor outlets where it's now required, adding AFCI protection on bedroom and living area circuits, correcting improper grounding or bonding, replacing exposed or improperly spliced wiring, and covering open junction boxes. We prioritize corrections by safety significance, address each one to current code, and document the work for any inspection or insurance requirements you're working toward.
Cost depends on how many violations are found and how accessible the affected wiring is – a home needing a handful of GFCI additions is a much smaller job than one with grounding issues throughout. Older homes in Madison, NJ going through a sale or insurance renewal often need this work on a tighter timeline, and we prioritize accordingly.
